Welcome to SOX Street Lighting: a page for the enthusiasts.
A website set-up for all the SOX & SON street lighting enthusiasts. Feel free to take a look around the website and leave your feedback and suggestions using the email: soxstreetlighting@gmail.com
This website was last updated on: Wednesday 3 December, 2025. See the details here.
SOX Street Lighting was set up in September 2024 to showcase the remaining hidden gems (known as SOX/Low Pressure Sodium Street Lights) left in the UK.
Although the photos shown on the main pages are taken by me and found in my county (or surrounding), you may find your photos on the showcase page!
In addition, I felt like setting up this page as a way to set out my interests for street lighting (primarily SOX, but I like SON too). Feel free to take a look around my page, and share it with any enthusiasts you know!
Growing up as a kid, I used to venture the streets with a friend because we had 'nothing else to do'. After going to the shop to get our evening snacks, we would usually take a back alley back home. And that's when we stood there, looked up and said 'this light is really cool'. We don't know why, but we now had a fascination with 'old street lights' (what we called them at the time).
Ever since 2015, I've had a fascination for SOX/SON street lighting (none of this LED rubbish)..
It was (and still is) always fascinating to see a Thorn Beta 5 just power on with the sunset in the backdrop. Just imagine yourself in the moment; the noise of cars in the far far distance, the sunset, the moon, the bright orange glow of the SOX lantern. Moments like that are what I cherish, a bit like how you stand on the ground staring up at the twilight sky - filled with stars.
There is definitely more of a warm, attaching feeling to a SOX lamp compared to a boring, generic LED light.
Keep checking back as this site will be updated all the time!
