Philips Mi26
Philips Mi26
The Philips Mi26 was arguably one of the most popular lanterns alongside the Thorn Beta 5 in the United Kingdom since 1985 up until the late 2010s when large towns and cities started replacing their street lights with LED lanterns.
Unfortunately, LED lanterns are now the preferred replacement lantern for councils as they cost less to run.
The "Mi" in Mi26 stands for Minor roads as the light would not be as suitable for main roads due to its standard 35w model (could also be fitted with a 26w SOX-E bulb).
A closer look...
Most Philips Mi26 lanterns that are still about tend to look like the image on the right when not on. It is very unlikely that you will find the model without any moss on top of it (thanks to our Great British weather, and the age of the lantern).
From researching the regions around me, I conclude that the most likely fate of the Philips Mi26 is "minor-looking" burnout at the end of the lamp. This could just be the lamps used in particular, but it is a different outcome to the Thorn Beta 5's I have witnessed.
